New
Smyrna Beach, FL – Dillon
Wood and his DWR Team returned to the O'Reilly Southern
All Star Racing Series title chase action in the state of
Georgia this past weekend. Dillon picked up where he had
left off the previous weekend by turning in a stellar
qualifying effort and scoring his first OSAS top ten of
the season. Dillon did a yeoman's job the previous weekend
at the three Georgia Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series,
qualifying for all three events against some of the
nation's best dirt racers.
Dillon
started the evening out at Toccoa Speedway by tripping the
clock at 12.751 seconds which was good enough to put him
fourth fast overall of the twenty-six drivers who took
time. Only Brent Dixon, eventual winner Benji Cole and
Stacy Holmes bested Dillon's lap. By virtue of his
qualifying effort and the OSAS format which locks the top
ten qualifiers in to the feature, Dillon and his team were
able to spend their time concentrating on the tire choice
and adjustments for the feature.
The
extra time spent preparing was readily apparent when the
green flag fell. Dillon had a very quick car and was able
to immediately begin to challenge Holmes to his inside.
But Holmes was also working to the inside of Dixon. Holmes
was able to make the pass a few laps in but Dillon got
hung up behind Dixon. "I could get to his inside
quarter on the straightaway but he was able to close the
door entering the corner. And by the time we figured out
the outside had come in we had lost several spots to the
guys who found the top." said Wood.
Wood
eventually bypassed Dixon but he had fell back to eighth.
Wood was able to make up one more spot and crossed the
line in the seventh position. "We had a lot of fun
tonight. I have to admit I wasn't too impressed when we
first got here but Toccoa is a neat little place and it's
pretty racy. We had a good car here too. My dad (Todd) and
Alex (Vickers) gave me a really balanced car. We were
quick right out of the trailer and this is our best finish
of the year so I am happy. I wish we could have got by
Brent a little quicker and we may have had a top
five."
Dillon
will take this weekend off and then return to the O'Reilly
Southern All Stars tour the following weekend when the
series makes it's first stop of the year at the Talladega
Short Track in Eastaboga, AL. "That is (Sprint) Cup
weekend and there are always a lot of fans and lots of
NASCAR people there. We want to run well there because you
never know who might be watching. We
may have a little surprise in the works for that race too.
I hope we can announce that later next week." said
Wood.
